Já não somos doces

film-play (2021)

About the film-play
Já não somos doces is a hybrid of a play and feature film made by Brecha, with its premiere season in November 2021 online via Sympla Streaming. The work was written and directed by Patrick Sampaio in collaboration with Carolina Muait, Gabriel Abreu, Júlia Portes, Leona Kalí and Jefferson Melo.

The play-film follows the story of a family that gets together for lunch at their parents’ house and was adapted for this format based on the play Quando formos doces, by João Ricardo, published by 7 Letras.

Through the use of a hybrid language between film and theater (in which it is not clear what is transmitted live and what is recorded), the work makes a critical investigation into the institution of family and its role in the development of the colonial project that formed Brazil. Based on references from the “new horror” (Ari Aster, Jordan Peele, Robert Eggers), the play-film invests in new ways of giving visibility to what can be truly terrifying in the contemporary world.

During the staging and filming process of the play-film, the group occupied a house in the Humaitá neighborhood, in Rio de Janeiro.

Both the play-film Já não somos doces and the publication of the book Quando formos doces are part of the project Quando formos doces, sponsored by the Federal Government in partnership with the Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro and State Secretariat for Culture and Creative Economy through the Aldir Blanc Emergency Law.
